BRIGHTON CHESS

A HISTORY OF CHESS IN BRIGHTON
1841-1993

GENERAL INDEX

N.B. This index reproduces the page numbers from the original printed edition of Brian Denman's book, which can be navigated via the menu on the club's old website, starting on this page.

Entries are filed word-by-word, with the exception of initialisms (‘BBC’, etc.) which precede all other entries with the same initial letter. Hyphenated names are filed under the first part of the name, with a cross-reference from the second (see ‘Storr-Best, John’ for an example), but compound names without a hyphen are filed under the last part of the name (e.g. ‘Ellis, J. Grosvenor’). Titles of periodicals are set in italics.

Individuals who have contributed significantly to the development of chess in Brighton are supplied with an analytic form of entry, in which page references for the main sections dealing with the individual are followed by other references, normally in chronological order: these additional references are supplied only for incidents or events not included in the main sections or on which significant additional information is to be found elsewhere.

Players for whom game scores are included in the text have separate entries in the Index of Games (p.174).

Entries for names appearing in the appendix (pp.143-59) have been supplied only for players closely identified with chess in Brighton and the surrounding area. There are no entries for the preface, foreword or list of sources.

‘[ ]’ after a surname indicates that the individual's initials are unknown.
